| Abstract(E) | There are currently developments throughout the World in Traffic Information and Route Guidance systems. New traffic information developments are generally seen as ways of increasing the timeliness and accuracy of the information by sending it independently of programme information. At the same time, worldwide developments are leading to affordable autonomous route guidance systems, capable of locating vehicles to within a few metres, planning routes to destinations and guiding on a turn-by-turn basis. The combination of these two processes produces a product which is stronger than the sum of the individual components. There are however two problems. Current traffic information systems are not designed to work with route guidance systems and implementation is being hampered by the inability to deliver sustainable services of a quality acceptable to the end-user. |
