| Abstract(E) | IFP's VEHGAN project focuses on the development of a mild-hybrid CNG prototype vehicle based on a MCC Smart car equipped with reversible starter-alternator and super-capacitors. The unfolding of this project has involved and still involves several interesting and challenging issues from an engine control point of view, such as coping with distinctive features of natural gas engines, mastering the automatic manual transmission (AMT) control system, integrating a new power source into the torque-oriented engine control structure and coordinating the actions of the different torque producers and consumers within the framework of an energy management system. The paper illustrates how the complementary activities of modeling and control contribute to the main outcome of the VEHGAN project : to show that a mild-hybrid CNG city-car is an affordable and viable solution, already available today, to substantially cut greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions in an urban environment. |
