Abstract(E) | According to “the Carbon Neutral Policy toward 2050” proposed by the Japanese government, a drastic reduction in CO2 emission has become one of the most significant challenges in the transportation sector. Internal combustion engines have the potential for improving their brake thermal efficiency up to 50-55% by 2030. Such improvements can contribute directly to a significant increase in the fuel economy of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) will serve as a bridge from HEVs to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) or co-exist with BEVs by taking advantage of minimizing the battery capacity. If carbon-free synthetic liquid fuels could successfully be developed at affordable costs, HEVs and PHEVs would continuously be used by utilizing such fuels. BEVs and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs) would likely play the major role in the ultimate carbon neutral society and to that end, it is essential to further enhance battery performance, reduce vehicle and energy costs as well as disseminate recharging and refueling stations providing renewables. |
