| Abstract(E) | To reach the goals of the Paris Agreement, a wide range of R&D using marine bioresources for biofuel production has been undertaken Worldwide. We have performed fundamental research in hydrogen production using marine bacteria as a biocatalyst, and we discovered a group of marine vibrios can unexpectedly produce hydrogen at much higher rates than those of known terrestrial bacteria. Those vibrio species possess unique genes for hydrogen production, and show high capability in formate re-import to generate hydrogen. In this mini-review, we introduce recent progress on hydrogen production using marine vibrios, and discuss the “raison d'être” of these marine vibrios. |
