| Abstract(E) | This research analyzed statistical data on traffic accidents to identify the characteristics of accidents caused by gear shift errors, through a comparison with those caused by pedal misapplications. Accidents caused by gear shift errors have a high proportion of elderly drivers and frequently occur in parking lots. The number of accidents during forward and reverse maneuvers is approximately equal. In vehicle-to-pedestrian accidents, pedestrians often sustain severe injuries, while in single-vehicle accidents, drivers also often sustain severe injuries. Although the vehicle speed just before the accident is relatively low, drivers can sustain fatal or serious injuries in single-vehicle accidents. |
