| Abstract(E) | Ammonia use in internal combustion engines can contribute to achieve deep decarbonization of the energy system in the short-term. However, stable operation of internal combustion engines using ammonia is difficult due to its low burning velocity. In this commentary article, strategies for achieving stable operation under part load of spark-ignition engines using ammonia are presented, focusing on: 1）dual fuel operation using methane and hydrogen as auxiliary fuels; and 2）increased compression ratio. Combining increased compression ratio with dual fuel operation using hydrogen produced from ammonia dissociation can be an attractive solution for stable operation of spark-ignition engines using ammonia under part load. |
